I've been reading a lot about Doulas, CNA's and whanot debating if they want to go to direct midwifery (aka Lay Midwifery) or persue a nursing degree and eventual masters in nursing, midwifery specialty (therefore becoming a Certified Nurse Midwife)... and I think I'm following suit for the latter.
This blog will chronicle my journey from a CNA recently hired at a hospital as a nurse tech in a department that isn't the area of nursing I want to end in, but am happy to be with nontheless. I only have a year of college under my belt, and only two of my credits are good enough to translate. Problem is- they're 14 years old.
My master plan- get my AS and BSN in nursing though a local 4 year (was 2 year community college that now offers BSNs), 80% of which are online or hybrid (online and one day in class plus testing on campus), the BSN is essentually completely online, save the clinicals. After that, there is a BSN to DSN in Midwifery though one of our state colleges, one of (I think) 2 schools offering CNM majors.
I'll be keeping track of my tests, the classes I have to take (thanks Midwife{ology} and At Your Cervix for your idea) and documenting what it's like for a 30-something wife and mother to work full time in a hosptial, work PRN as a douls and persue my dream of being a baby catcher... it's a heafty undertaking, but when you feel called, there's nothing unsurmountable in your way.
